The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a significant prize-giving event nears, you'll find a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier game development, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
