Exactly 30 years after the first Toy Story film was released, establishing the animation giant as a major animation studio and bringing audiences to iconic figures like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now famous worldwide.
Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a glimpse into the plot but leaving viewers curious how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.
The preview shows the young girl — who received the toy collection when he left for college — getting a brand new toy, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie gets her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.
Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the characters appear to consider it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it likely will.
One thing the teaser doesn't touch on is what Woody is back with his companions in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), traveling with a fair and helping giveaway items find good homes.
Certainly, the filmmakers will address the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, though. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have come back with Woody. And what about Duke Caboom (the star)?
At the very least, some aspects are carrying over from the prior film. The final act Woody did before setting off for his fresh path was pass his symbol of authority to Jessie (the voice actor), leaving her as the leader of the toy domain. In the teaser shows the badge pinned to her shirt.
It is hoped she is remains the key figure among the toys.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
