After a pivotal victory at the Lusail Grand Prix, Max Verstappen has substantially closed the gap in the driver's standings. Now sitting just a dozen points behind leader McLaren's Lando Norris and in front of teammate Oscar Piastri, everything is in place for a nail-biting three-way championship battle at the famous Yas Marina Circuit.
The Dutchman's most recent win was not at all predictable. While he delivered a superb drive for his team, the race outcome was significantly impacted by a questionable strategic move from the McLaren team. Opting to keep their cars out during an initial safety car period, the team inadvertently handed the race lead to their rival, who seized the moment perfectly.
"I'm thrilled, I'm happy to go there and have a go at it," the driver said. "My mindset is with just good vibes. I will give everything I can but equally, even without the title, I still know that I had a fantastic season."
This perspective as he puts it takes a lot of the pressure. The goal for the final round is straightforward: to maximize each opportunity from himself and the RB21.
The remarkable aspect of Verstappen's championship charge truly astonishing is the margin he has recovered. After the Zandvoort round in August, he was a staggering over a century of points behind the championship leader Oscar Piastri and had essentially conceded his championship hopes.
The turnaround began with significant performance updates introduced by his team at the Italian Grand Prix. Adjustments to the vehicle's underbody and aerodynamic package finally addressed persistent performance deficits, allowing the driver to feel comfortable with the chassis once more.
Following those upgrades, his performance has been completely spectacular, securing a quintet of triumphs and several top-three finishes. He was quick to highlight the unified work behind this resurgence.
"We have triumphed where maybe the odds were against us, by making the right call as a unit," Verstappen added. "The partnership with my team on the pit wall and the whole team... we are perfectly synchronized."
Ahead of the head to Abu Dhabi, the championship picture is crystal clear.
The intensity now shifts on the papaya-colored cars, who have seen a sizable lead disappear due to costly errors, including a double disqualification in Las Vegas. In his view, being the hunter creates an atmosphere of fearlessness, transforming the ultimate Grand Prix into a simple chance to go for glory with nothing to lose.
