The Contents of the Case Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?

Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped inside a mental fortress built from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their mission for an escape route in episode 6 forces them to relive a defining event from Henry's childhood—an event that could contain the means to overcome him for good.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft

When she finds Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a telescope found in Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a Henry as a boy come across an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly questions through tears. Essentially, yes, but the act went deeper than a simple act of survival.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a warship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to sell to the Soviets, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. That traitor in the mine shaft is that employee.

So, What's in the Case?

Considering what is understood of his research, the container would assuredly have vials of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the container could have held dark matter that later made its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. The stage play explains that the boy ended up in the Abyss, returning hours later with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he battles the whispers of a malevolent force, much like how the character Will was influenced by the Mind Flayer in season 2.

Confronting Terror

His lasting fear linked to that memory demonstrates how utterly horrifying the incident was for him. Even as he commands the collective consciousness and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to fortify himself.

This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the endgame conflict that awaits.
