The Caribbean Nation Provides US Military Access to Its Airports As Growing Strains with Venezuela

The government of Trinidad and Tobago has announced it will permit the United States military to operate from its airports shortly. This development comes as mounting regional tensions between the US and nearby Venezuela.

New Defense System Sparks Debate

This statement comes after the deployment of a sophisticated radar system at an airport in Tobago. National officials have insisted the radar's intended role is for combating domestic crime, stressing it will not be a launchpad for military strikes against any nation.

Skeptics warn, however, that these arrangements risks pulling Trinidad and Tobago into ex-President Donald Trump's intensifying pressure campaign against Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

Nature of Access and Official Statements

In a ministry statement, US operations at the airports would be “logistical in nature”, assisting with stocking provisions and regular staff changes. Officials did not elaborate regarding the scope.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has previously supported US operations targeting alleged drug ships in the Caribbean and Pacific, strikes that have reportedly led to dozens of deaths, including a number of Trinidadian citizens.

Initial Claims and Subsequent Revelations

At first, Persad-Bissessar claimed a US C-17 aircraft arriving in Tobago was transporting marines to support a local road construction project. However, after images surfaced of the defense system, she acknowledged that at least 100 marines were present in the country, accompanied by the high-performance radar.

This system, thought to be a long-range AN/TPS-80 G/ATOR, is marketed as air surveillance, defense, and counter-fire operations.

The twin-island nation is situated a mere seven miles from Venezuela at their closest point. The country has main airports: Piarco International in Trinidad and ANR Robinson International in Tobago.

The airport access agreement comes after a previous incident in October, when a US warship docked in Trinidad's capital, as part of the Trump administration's ramped-up military pressure against Venezuela.

Meanwhile, US lawmakers have raised questions about the legality of the aforementioned maritime strikes and have called for a congressional review.
