A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national projects. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested pending a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
