New Year's Revelers Urged to Wrap Up Warm with Snow Expected Throughout the UK

Forecasters are reporting a frosty beginning to the new year, with snowfall anticipated across much of the UK. Celebrants are advised to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Proceed In Spite of Forecasts

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay celebrations are expected to take place, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so additional clothing will be necessary," stated the Met Office.

Celebrations Under Clear but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Readings are forecast to be cold, so extra layers vital, said forecasters.

To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Broad Snow Warnings for Friday

Heading into Friday, advisories have been issued for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Readings Expected to Drop Further

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Medical Warnings Released

In addition, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency explained this indicated the weather was likely to trigger major effects across medical and care provision. This encompasses a likely increase in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.
