Hamilton Island, a Popular Queensland Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Acquired by American Investment Giant.

A major tropical holiday destination situated on the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American investment group for a sum said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.

Details of the Sale

Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, pending standard approvals from regulators.

The sellers released a statement noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.

Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities

Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton covers over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.

Approximately 30% of the area is developed, including a significant range of amenities:

• Five separate hotels
• Over twenty dining and drinking venues
• Twenty shops and retail spaces
• An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
• A boat marina and a functioning airport

The resort is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, sustaining a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.

A Look Back at The Island's History

The deceased Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and vintner, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.

The island's development boom first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to simple iron huts and modest accommodations that housed Australian vacationers from inland areas and from the south.

Blackstone also owns hotels and luxury resorts in multiple nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.

The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
