Glasgow Warriors kicked off their Champions Cup campaign in perfect fashion with a valuable four-try win on the road against Sale.
Taking advantage of the elements at their backs, the hosts started the brighter and raced to a fourteen-point lead within 20 minutes. Tries from Ernst van Rhyn and youngster Ollie Davies put them in command.
However, the visitors responded admirably with a pair of scores before the interval. Forward Gregor Hiddleston and back-rower Rory Darge both crossed to narrow the deficit.
Additional second-half scores from Kyle Steyn and centurion Stafford McDowall pushed Glasgow's advantage to 26-14. Marius Louw's try for Sale promised a tense finale, but the visitors held firm to claim a major first-round win.
Play began with a bang as skipper Ernst van Rhyn scored from close range after only two minutes. An early injury to midfielder Rekeiti Ma'asi-White brought 19-year-old Davies into the fray for his cup debut.
Davies made an immediate impact. Moving to fly-half, he took a smart angle to collect an pass and score, making Sale's lead.
Against challenging conditions, Glasgow used their forward power to get back into the game. A powerful line-out drive was finished by front-rower Gregor Hiddleston. Prior to the break, Rory Darge barged over, with Hastings' conversion making it a narrow game at half-time.
Glasgow took the lead for the first occasion soon after the second half. A poor kick was collected by No. 8 Dempsey, who set up captain Steyn to break a tackle and race away to the line.
Now in the driving seat, Glasgow clinched the fourth try when McDowall ran through a tackle to score his 100th appearance for the team. This try capped a sequence of 26 consecutive points.
Sale gave themselves a late hope when Louw used good footwork to score. The kick made it a five-point game with minutes remaining.
One last opportunity arose for Sale from a line-out in the corner, but they lost the ball, sealing Glasgow's triumph.
Sale Sharks must bounce back ahead of a trip to face Clermont next Saturday. Meanwhile, Glasgow will host six-time winners Toulouse to their home ground.
Both sides are placed in a strong first pool that also includes the English side and Durban-based team the Hollywoodbets Sharks.
