Individuals from both sides of the political spectrum and the entertainment industry are coming together to censure former President Donald Trump for his remarks following the tragic deaths of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood home, Trump posted on his platform to describe the late director as "tortured and struggling". In a message, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he provoked others through his enormous, unyielding, and untreatable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Authorities have since announced the detention of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bail was established at a substantial amount.
The reaction to Trump's post was swift and scathing.
“What a vile and vile comment,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly criticized the statements. She pointed to prior rhetoric from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, asking, "Do you have no decency? Is it possible to get any lower?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "This is a disturbed man."
Echoing this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick."
Some Republican elected officials also expressed disapproval.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also mentioned challenges with addiction and mental health within families.
Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disgraceful" considering the circumstances. He publicly challenged members in his political party to defend the statements.
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the risks of autocracy should Trump be reelected to power.
"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democracy collapse around the world."
Regardless of his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "absolute horror" and condemned political violence without reservation following the shooting of a different political figure.
Adding a element of historical connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously recounted the story of the session, mentioning Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" while posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
