The offspring of former South African Leader Jacob G Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror-linked charges at the start of her legal proceedings in the harbor city of Durban city.
The defendant, forty-three, is being charged over statements she made on digital networks four years ago during fatal unrest in South Africa that came after the detention of her dad.
A week of anarchy in multiple regions of the country in July 2021, including looting and fire-setting, resulted in at least 300 individuals killed and resulted in damage worth an approximate $2.8 billion (£2.2bn).
The defendant has been accused of encouraging this turmoil and is charged with accusations of provocation to commit terrorism and public disorder.
The demonstrations were focused in the provinces of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal and were triggered by the former president's apprehension for defying a judicial ruling to give evidence at an investigation into allegations of impropriety while he was serving as president.
The defendant has consistently refuted the accusations against her, with her legal representative in the past labelling the government's case as unsubstantiated.
She has also repeatedly stated the charges against her were an effort to resolve political grievances with her dad after he started his own political organization and ran against the ruling party.
This was echoed by the foundation, which stated the proceedings was an "power abuse" and a "systematic campaign" of "politically motivated and familial targeting" against the former president and his kin.
A small number of supporters from her group, the political party, appeared outside the provincial high court, while her parent and other party leaders attended the proceedings inside.
The defense has stated that the evidence presented by the state is unconvincing and lacks substantial proof for a criminal finding.
The court case continues as both sides present their cases before the court in what is projected to be a carefully observed legal battle with major politically charged consequences for South Africa.
